Our Program
At Casa Palmera, we understand that treating pain and trauma means healing both the mind and the body. We believe in the use of both sound medical and psychological core treatment for trauma and pain management. This treatment includes a thorough evaluation of physical health, psychological coping and present discomfort.
We offer a foundation of sound psychological and psychiatric assessments and treatment while at the same time eliminating unwarranted medication by utilizing appropriate medications as indicated by present symptoms. Recommendations for future and follow-up procedures and therapies once returning home are also offered.
Our pain management and trauma treatment programs at Casa Palmera provide the best in traditional therapies combined with holistic mind-body support in order to assess your psychological and physical problems. Psychotherapeutic approaches depend upon what is indicated for each person, but typically include Interpersonal/Group Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Family Therapy, Nutritional Therapy and Expressive Arts Therapy, depending on each person. What is Trauma?
Trauma is the fear and shock someone experiences following either a very stressful situation or after sustaining a serious injury. Trauma can come from many sources such as assault, war, natural disaster, accidents, loss of a loved one or any number of other tragedies. This typically unexpected experience overtakes the survivor and often times leaves long lasting negative psychological effects.
Some of the time, those who suffer from trauma also have another co-occurring dilemma. These additional problems include pain, eating disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia, or the struggle with chemical dependency.
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic Pain is a constant pain that can last from a few months to many years. This inconvenient problem causes severe pain, sleep deprivation and even depression if it persists for a long period of time. Pain can be caused by injuries, types of diseases or merely weak bones and muscles. For instance, a common central nervous system disorder that causes great pain through the body is fibromyalgia. Anyone can have chronic pain, but it is most common in middle aged to older adults.
How are Trauma & Chronic Pain Related?
Trauma and pain may seem to be unrelated at all, as they each primarily affect different aspects of a person. What you may not realize, however, is that these two disturbances can occur at the same time, as a result of the same instance.
A car crash is one example in which pain and trauma often occur together. Numerous problems can arise in an accident. The first complication that often comes to mind is that of injury or pain. When a car is in some sort of an accident its passengers often sustain some sort of injury or experience an instance of pain. Because car crashes are unexpected and often frightening, trauma can also arise. It is important to realize that one's psychological state (trauma) can effect the physical state (pain).
Other examples and instances in which trauma and pain occur together include abuse, kidnapping, natural disaster, assault and war. In virtually every instance of trauma, there is some way physical pain can occur. It does not matter whether the traumatic event is deliberate or accidental, natural or man made- both pain and trauma can occur from it.
