What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is the expression of thoughts and feelings through the creative process of art. This expressive therapy has proven to be particularly helpful for those in alcohol rehab, bulimia treatment, trauma therapy and anorexia treatment. It is utilized as a vehicle for healing and fostering personal growth. Through artistic expression, reflection, and discussion of the artwork with an art therapist, patients are able to tap into their unconscious.

The process of art therapy is a three-way relationship between the client, the therapist and work of art. Through this relationship, an emotional connection is created. Art therapists, educated in both psychotherapy and art, utilize their experience and knowledge of psychology, spirituality, human development, clinical practice, and multicultural artistic traditions to elicit the healing potential of art.

Art Therapy assessments are typically included in the therapy process. These assessments include a series of instructed tasks which are later analyzed to gain further insight about the artist.

Who Can Benefit From Art Therapy?

Anyone can take art therapy. Art therapy is beneficial for many different types of people from all age ranges. Classes are available for individuals, couples, families and groups. Typically, those involved in drug rehab, eating disorder treatment and trauma recovery are among those attending art therapy sessions. These classes however, can benefit anyone who wishes to reduce stress and improve upon relationships and self-esteem.

One does not have to be a skilled artist to take art therapy. No experience or talent is required. Art therapy is about freely and spontaneously expressing oneself through the artistic process.

Benefits of Art Therapy

The benefits of art therapy in aiding psychological trauma treatment are many. Art therapy helps reconcile emotional or life conflicts, release deeply repressed emotions and process through traumatic experiences, mental issues, anxiety, depression and stress. The therapy can also enhance cognitive abilities, increase self-esteem, promote reality orientation, and foster self-awareness.
