What Drugs Are Involved In Drink Spiking?

What is Drink Spiking?

Drink spiking is the act of adding drugs or alcohol to someone’s beverage (often alcoholic) without their permission. Most cases of drink spiking occur with the intention of sexual assault or robbery. Other reasons include kidnapping, anger toward the chosen victim or entertainment. Young women are the most common targets of this illegal crime, although approximately 11% of men are victims as well. Most cases of drink spiking occur in night clubs, bars and parties. Dizziness, blackouts, poor coordination and decreased inhibitions are just a few of the effects of drink spiking.

When someone’s drink is spiked due to alcohol or drugs, they often do not realize it until it is far too late and they are either unconscious or unable to communicate properly. Unfortunately, in many cases of drink spiking the victim does not even realize anything is wrong until the event has passed and they wake up uncomfortable and with memory loss. Most people who have their drinks spiked eventually blackout, which typically occurs in a few hours. A blackout can last up to 12 hours and is followed by memory loss.

What Drugs are used for Drink Spiking?

Types of drugs and alcohol involved in drink spiking include:

  • Alcohol – Alcohol is perhaps the most popular drug used to spike drinks. People use alcohol in drink spiking either by adding it to a non-alcoholic beverage or by adding extra shots to an already alcoholic beverage. In some drink combinations, you may not even be able to taste added alcohol.
  • GHB – This drug has effects similar to that of ecstasy and most often comes in the form of a liquid or powder. Its effects take place in 10 to 20 minutes. This drug can be very dangerous but becomes even more dangerous when added to alcohol. Effects of GHB include inability to speak properly, poor motor coordination, sleepiness, amnesia, hallucinations and short-term comas. GHB is odorless and colorless, although it may have a slightly salty or bitter taste to it.
  • Ketamine – Ketamine is meant to be used among veterinarians as an anaesthetic for animals. It most often comes in liquid form and it typically injected. Use of this drug creates an out of body experience which becomes more extreme the more you take of the drug. The name of this effect is a “K-hole”. Boredom, nausea, confusion, amnesia and vision problems are other effects of ketamine. This depressant’s effects take place in about 5 to 20 minutes.
  • Rohypnol – This drug is a popular drug of choice for drink spiking and most often comes in pill form This depressant is similar to the drug valium, but much more potent. Effects of this drug include slurred speech, inability to concentrate, poor coordination, dizzy feelings, lack of inhibition, nausea and amnesia. It takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes to feel the effects of this drug. In more recent years, a blue dye has been added to this drug as a way of preventing drink spiking. This dye however cannot be seen in dark colored beverages or bottles.

Additional categories (which may include drugs already mentioned) and types of drugs include:

  • Benzodiazepines
  • Midazolam
  • Ethanol
  • Temazepam
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Hypnotics
  • Ecstasy
  • Burunganda
  • LSD
  • Methamphetamines
  • Barbiturates
  • Valium

What are the Effects of Drink Spiking?

The effects of drink spiking differ for each person. Reactions differ based on a person’s age, sex, size and on what type of drug or alcoholic beverage was given. Common effects include:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Decreased inhibitions
  • Paralysis
  • Inability to protect ones’ self
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Muscle spasms
  • Poor coordination
  • Euphoric feelings
  • Sleepiness
  • Respiratory complications
  • Slurring of speech
  • Dizziness

Some people who have been affected by drink spiking feel as if they have had more alcohol than they actually did or sense that they have had sex but do not remember it. Other people wake up feeling almost hung over and have no memory of certain periods of time. Severe cases can lead to anxiety and potential trauma treatment.

I am convinced my daughters drink was spiked and I’m wondering how to determine if GHB was added. Within 15 min of consuming her drink a shot of Amarula, she virtually collapsed and started vomiting, we rushed her to the ER as she was unresponsive. She seemed as if in a coma BP dropped to 80/60 all the while vomiting but unconscious. She has been like that for 3 hours and shaking what test can be performed to establish if this is in fact GHB. She regained consciousness briefly to calling her name but is “passed out” again. how long does this last?

I was out celebrating with friends and had my drink spiked, I had only taken a sip of my second drink of the night, when I started feeling dizzy, I didn’t have anymore of it, as I knew, something wasn’t right.

I met a woman online and we met for drinks and a snack. We decided to get a room (her suggestion) and she was both affectionate and stand-offish at the same time, which seemed odd since she was the one to contact me to begin with (it was an adult oriented singles site).

Next thing I knew I was waking up 12 hours later in a room that I didn’t recall being in, until I had a look around. She was nowhere to be found and had left unannounced. I checked my wallet and my cash and credit card were missing. Thank god the car keys were still there.

I was very weak and disoriented when standing up and remain so 12 hours later. We are going to do what we can to have this woman arrested. She even sent some photos that she took while I was passed out, lying prone and upright naked on a bed which she’s threatened to publish, adding a comment that I ‘should have let the shoes go through’, a purchase that was denied when she tried to use my CC while I was still passed out.

I have no idea when she drugged my drink but in hindsight she was careful to note which one was mine and which was hers.

I was at a Family reunion Sat night with my Fiance, I only remember have 3 drinks there and having a good time. I don’t remember leaving with her, but sometime around 4 am I found myself driving somewhere in the western part of the state. I have no recollection of anything. Only knew I had hurt someone. I found out I had assaulted her. I still can’t believe I did this. She said she didn’t recognize my voice and I would stop, She knows it wasn’t me behind it, but thinks it was the alcohol, Is there a drug out there that can be put into a drink to cause that kind of anger? Uncontrolled rage? I found a police dept in a small town to help me, and requested to be tested but they wouldn’t. And now I’m in a fight to protect myself. What can I do?

My drink was spiked last nite, it was just plain water after I had 2 glasses of red wine. This guy I met was with me when he spiked my drinks, I know this when I get so high even after taking plain water, strange enough I was so lucky to feel this and couldnt thinking any further but just to leave this club. He was one of the influential person there but thank god I could ran away out of there and managed to walk in my two feet and got into my car and drove home, safely thank god. Anybody out there who feels things are not right just leave, dont wait any longer.

I was sitting down for a bit at the club and I was completely fine. I know my alcohol tolerance and I had stopped drinking for the night. This one American came up to me. He look liked he was in his late 30s and he was wearing a baseball cap, a big sweater, and long pants. He said I didn’t look too good so I went him to the bar so he could get me a water. I should’ve been watching him, because after we sat back down he was saying he would pay for my cab ride back and asking when i wanted to leave and that he would accompany me to make sure I was safe and at first my stupid self was really excited like I was thinking “Oh yes, I’m going to save money, he’s going to pay for it.” We were chatting while I was drinking my water but then something kicked in and I started feeling hella dizzy, all the lights and the people and the music were all just really intense. I threw up four times in my mouth and he kept trying to talk to me and I just was frozen like I had this bad gut wrenching feeling about him and I would not move and that’s when he bailed casually said bye and dipped into a crowd, probably might’ve even have left idk. Luckily my friend found me right after and they just took me on the dance floor.

She denied it. when on a rant. threw the coffee cup in my face. said I was hallucination because of my room. thats when I knew I am probably been drugged. I can sleep for 11 hours straight. and have experience these effects. Decreased inhibitions
    Inability to protect ones’ self
    Memory loss
    Nausea, vomiting
    Muscle spasms
    Poor coordination

This morning as usual I bought a large hot chocalate with french vanila taste. I always have this same kind. Today it is Thursday. I sipped the 2 and 3 sips, my heart started beating fast. I thought it was kind of tiredness. I sipped a bit and bit. But strangely after each bit, my heart started to beat faster with discomfort. I alwasy drink the same. Just today, it was so uncomfortable. All of sudden, it occured to me that I was drugged. I stopped drinking immeidately. From 9:00am all the way up to 1:50pm. I had been gradually recovering, first my heart was back to normal. But around 11~ 12, my eye lid was pretty heavy. Up to 1:50pm, I was confidentally saying I was fine with my eye lids a bit rusty. By 3:11pm, I am back to normal. During this period, i am checking internet, knowing i am being spiked.

I’m an Australian girl, 21yo, currently in Bali Indonesia. I went to a bar alone last night and a friendly guy introduced himself to me. Disappeared then came back again later and we talked for a while before he offered me a drink. I asked for a white wine, he came back with a red wine. I was like ok, whatever, I’ll drink it. I began developing a bad feeling about him when he began touching me a lot when he spoke to me. So I told him I had to leave, and I went to my friends place. I had one more wine. So at this point I’d only drunk 2 standard drinks. When suddenly, about an hour later, within seconds I felt incredibly drunk and nauseous. I had to go and sit down and breathe fresh air, and I was also sweating a lot. I could not do anything but close my eyes and breathe through it. Then, after 10 minutes I was 100% fine! Back to normal! Sober! So I drove home. It was the strangest experience.. And I wonder if the man spiked my red wine.. I have a fairly high tolerance to drugs.. I don’t know. And he may have been worried I’d be able to see the drug in White wine so he ‘accidentally’ got me red wine. He was a weirdo regardless.

Pretty sure I’m experiencing the after mass of a drink spiking, I’m kicking myself because I never leave my drink unattended, did once now this, combination of a high drug tolerance, great friends and it being at my local that I’ve been going to since I was 18 and I know the staff. I was safe luckily, but I feel dreadful and I hadn’t drank much at all, kept vomitting, dont remember chunks of time, my feet keep spasming,i was out of it, it was horrible, didn’t pass out, but gonna be a lot more mindful now. The thing that really annoys me is I’m asthmatic. I’ve been having really bad attacks this week but got it under control Thursday, and someone spiked me. Not to mention it could have reacted to meds I was on but it could have really effected my breathing. It’s not hard to spark asthma off. Is it really worth putting some one else’s life in danger for? I think not.

Got taken to a house party by a mate and his girlfriend last new years eve. Walked in the front door, had a drink put in my hand, and 30 mins later I was found unconscious on the bathroom floor with no shoes on. Whoever spiked me had followed me around until I passed out, taken my
trainers off my feet, and gone through my pockets, taking my shoes, phone, and the money I had to get home. I got carried upstairs deadweight and put on a bed.

Woke up late the next morning feeling lousy with no memory of either the party or where I was. I’d been unconscious for over 12 hours. Was told by the homeowners they threw someone out who admitted drugging both me and my mate’s girlfriend. Turned out I’d twice been carried out the house to a taxi, but that both drivers refused to take me because I was so unconscious.

It wasn’t being drugged and robbed that I minded so much. It was waking up with no memory of the previous day, and waking up in strange house where no one knew me that scared me. The whole thing has turned me in to a recluse, and I’m now paranoid around everyone.

Three weeks ago my drink was spiked. I’m unsure of what drug had been used, but in all my years of drinking one particular alcohol drink i have grown to understand what my favourite drink is suppose to taste and smell like.
On this particular night, i never actually purchased the boottle he did. When he arrived at my house earlier than expected one of the things he said was, that we were going to drink the whiskey straight. I opposed my opinion and said that i had a mix for the whiskey in the cupboard he refused. Because i have been drinking whiskey for over ten years knowing how strong it is and made sure that it was always mixed, i never ever drunk it straight. He poured my glass first which was three quarters full. When he poured his glass i noticed that, his wasn’t as full as mine. He then told me to drink up. I took the first sip and felt my throat burn. Literally. The next few mouth fulls from my glass, felt like my throat was on fire and i did mention to him few times, it was to strong. He kept telling me to ‘drink up’. As i was sitting down, i deciced to get up from where i was when i did my head started to race like million miles an hour, my legs felt like heavy almost like i was carrying a ton of bricks on each leg. My eyes were glassy, i became nasua at one point and i felt like i was there? But not there at all? My body felt like it was just slowing down i tried to stay focused as much as i could, but i did feel like that something wasn’t right. This lasted for over twenty minutes that i do remember, i was still conscious barely though became sleepy .I just kept moving around walking as much as i could to stay awake. What i do know is, not once did he ask if i was ok or anything he just kept looking at me almost like he was waiting for something to happen. I never drank my whole glass, because of how my throat burned and the fact my head was still spinning . About an hour later he left. I was sick for about three days afterwards, I’m guessing that’s because of whatever drug he put into the bottle would have remained in body. I have never ever in all my years of drinking whiskey had i experienced anything like that before, and I have been in some state conditions when i have drunk, nothing to what i experienced that night nor something I’ll ever forget. I do know one thing, that wasn’t my usual taste or smell of whiskey that i had been drinking for over ten years so whatever he put in that bottle of whiskey was lethal. He was waiting for me to pass out, so he could put me into his car and god forbid the thought he had planned. But what saved me was the fact i didn’t drink that whole glass of whiskey. Thank God.

I was out drinking the other night and was getting a ride home. This guy spiked my drink with ghb. Except I was really drunk I asked for water. He must have put it in there or something because maybe 10/20 minutes later I got home and became violent. I am not a violent drinker. The water tasted salty but I was too drunk to think about it clearly. Anyways. My roommate wouldn’t let me in because of what happened. They came outside to check on me. I passed out on the ground and I want breathing. They called the an ambulance . I woke up 8 hours later in the hospital with an I’ve in my arm.. I was lucky I didn’t get raped.

Anyone who knows a lot about drugs and can tell me what I might have experienced here?
Last night I was drinking with some girls, some I didn’t know well.
I drank enough alcohol that when I felt nausea I put it down to lowered alcohol tolerance and put myself to bed just in time to skip going out. This was about 11PM.
When I woke up I initially felt fine but I was sick within a few minutes.
Despite just consuming a large amount of water I only spewed bile. It continued on and off for a while, I felt horrible. Shortly I was hallucinating. I saw people I knew and thought I could feel them if they touched me. I tried to sleep but it was difficult. these events started at 6:40AM and finished up at about 12:30PM.
I have felt lethargic all day and are wondering what might have been in my system.
