About Encinitas
Encinitas is one of the most beautiful beach communities in San Diego County, if not all of Southern California. With a population of 63,184, it is still small enough to retain its historical roots, but it is also keeping up with the times, thanks to a lively downtown scene with some of the hottest restaurants in the county as well as a thriving retail corridor at the opposite end of the city on El Camino Real.
Encinitas became a city in 1986, bringing together five communities: Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Leucadia, Olivenhain, and Cardiff. Each community has retained its signature character—the wide-open spaces of Olivenhain and the “funky” businesses of Leucadia, for instance—while still coming together to create a city unlike any other.
Encinitas is famous for its six miles of beaches, such as Moonlight State Beach, as well as surf breaks such as Swami’s and Pipes. The San Elijo state campground welcomes visitors with its oceanfront views, while the San Elijo Lagoon Reserve has the honor of being San Diego County’s largest coastal wetlands, with plenty of trails and a nature center. Encinitas also boasts two of the loveliest botanical locations in the county: the Self-Realization Center gardens, perched on a cliff above the beach, and the San Diego Botanic Garden, with plant species from around the world.
Encinitas also has built a vibrant shopping and dining community surrounding the 101, which travels through the downtown areas of Leucadia, Old Encinitas, and Cardiff. You can spend an entire day just visiting the cool coffee shops, tasting rooms, restaurants, and boutiques. There is also plenty to see when it comes to the arts, whether it is a concert at the oceanview library or an exhibit at Lux Art Institute.
The city offers plenty of other amenities for local residents. There are several parks with trails, a train station that’s a regular stop on the Coaster line, a community and senior center with many programs for residents, a public golf course, and highly rated school districts for elementary, middle school, and high school campuses.
